چکیده
Abstract Studies of the low-frequency variabilities key climate variables are often handicapped by limited length available instrumental observations. To tackle this, use a set historical flood/drought index (FDI) spanning from AD 1470 to 2000 for 120 sites in China has been made investigate multiscale temporal variability annual precipitation applying wavelet methods. The analyses reveal oscillating components FDI time series decadal multi-decadal, and quasi-centennial range, as well interannual range. Searching for decadal variations in ENSO precipitation teleconnections
In many regions the strength of El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections has varied over the last century. It is an active area of research to investigate how such changes can be related to long-term climate variability or climate change. However, fluctuations due to the limited observational record and the low signal/noise ratio also contribute to variations in the apparent strength...
متن کاملInterdecadal Modulation of ENSO Teleconnections
The existence of quasi-decadal variability in the Pacific sector climate (e.g., Latif and Barnett 1994, 1996; Mantua et al. 1997; Minobe 1997) has important implications for long-range climate prediction in North America. The spatial manifestations in climate variables around the North Pacific sector associated with the North Pacific oscillation (NPO) are qualitatively similar to those of ENSO....
متن کاملDecadal Variations in the Strength of Enso Teleconnections with Precipitation in the Western United States
Changing patterns of correlations between the historical average June–November Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and October–March precipitation totals for 84 climate divisions in the western US indicate a large amount of variability in SOI/precipitation relations on decadal time scales. Correlations of western US precipitation with SOI and other indices of tropical El Niño–Southern Oscillation ...
متن کاملConfirmation of ENSO-Southern Ocean Teleconnections Using Satellite-Derived SST
The Southern Ocean is the focus of many physical, chemical, and biological analyses due to its global importance and highly variable climate. This analysis of sea surface temperatures (SST) and global teleconnections shows that SSTs are significantly spatially correlated with both the Antarctic Oscillation and the Southern Oscillation, with spatial correlations between the indices and standardi...
متن کاملNon-ENSO control on southern Africa precipitation variability.
The objective of this study is to quantify the nature of the mechanisms of southern Africa rainfall variability, unrelated to the El Nino Southern Oscillation, by means of a simple empirical composite analysis, as a baseline for a more detailed study.
